Wearing: vintage slip, Muji Coat, Prada Heels.
This vintage slip dress has quite a lengthy history behind it. It was given to my mother by a gorgeous elderly lady named Norma, who used to babysit my brother and I when we were young. The dress was actually Norma's sister's, who passed away and left a enormous collection of vintage fabrics and half made items to Norma, which she then gifted to my mother. This slip dress was lost in the back of my mother's workroom for the past fifteen years. However, we recently re-discovered it, and I quickly claimed it as my own.
It is completely hand sewn, and we estimate it to be from the 1940s. Thankfully, it fits me perfectly and I think it is a somewhat unique take on the 'slip dress' style floating around at the moment. I love the idea of a slip dress worn out of the house - it suggests a certain nonchalant charm and sense of mystery. Particularly when paired with a coat, giving the impression you simply leapt out of bed and headed out the door. These are a few of my current favourites:
Clockwise, from left: Ari Dein Carnegie Tuxedo Slip, Elle Macpherson Intimates French Flavour Chemise, Organic by John Patrick Bias Slip, Araks Elin Slip, Meadham Kirchhoff Slip Dress, Pink Memories Broderie Vest Top
From Left: Zara Two Tone Lingerie Style Dress, Studio Mesh Dress, Lingerie Style Dress, Lingerie Style Studio Top, Lace Hem Shorts
When choosing a slip dress, aim for pure silk - it skims the body and is dramatically more flattering than man-made fibres. Unfortunately, Zara's collection of slip dresses are all polyester, however their designs are gorgeous, and are some of the few black slip dresses currently available. I purchased the Zara Lace Shorts a month ago, and although they sit somewhat awkwardly, they are perfect to wear everywhere from university to a dinner date.
Needless to say, lingerie based styles, and lace details will definitely be featuring heavily in my wardrobe over the upcoming months!
